Weekly Web Roundup: The Twitter Edition #8

The biggest news this week was the announcement from Google about their new operating system - Google Chrome OS. It will be an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks and available in late 2010.

One of my favourite finds this week has been What Is The Fail Whale from Yiying Lu. It’s a site dedicated to the adorable ‘Fail Whale’ image which occurs during periods of downtime on Twitter. It’s amazing to find so much has been written on the illustration!

Alongside the major news there were plenty of other great articles and resources being published over the last week, my favourite of which are summarised below.

I’ve called this the Twitter edition due to the popularity of the first link below which focused on the different stages of Twitter, it certainly rang true for a lot of us!

• The 46 stages of Twitter
  From – “Hear the word Twitter. Scoff” to “Make it your life mission to get RT’d.” This is a brilliantly ironic look at the stages of Twitter most people experience.
• 100 Essential Skills for Geeks
  As Geeks we are expected to have a certain set of skills that the majority do not possess. This list is a good sample of the skills required to be a true geek.
• 10 Things You can Do with WordPress Besides Blogging
  Wordpress can do nearly anything that can be done within a web site. I guarantee that you will learn something after reading this post!
• Grid-Based Design: Six Creative Column Techniques
  A grid that has creatively overlapping, escaping, or energizing columns leads to a more enjoyable user experience. Learn some great techniques.
• 50+ Tools To Make You a More Efficient & Organized Designer
  This collection of excellent tools will help make you a better, faster, and more collective designer, if you use them correctly.
• 16 Business Lessons for Freelancers
  Whether you freelance part-time or full-time, paying attention to the lessons that you’re learning will drastically improve your chances of success.
• SlickMap CSS
  A simple stylesheet for displaying sitemaps from HTML. Streamlines the design process by automating the illustration of sitemaps.
• 2009 Web Design Trends and How-To’s
  A superb post which takes the current design trends and adds a list of tutorials within each to show you how to recreate these popular trends.
• 100+ Minimal and Typographic Package Designs
  Some really beautiful examples of package design that either has a minimal style, or a typographic based solution. My fave is the cider can, check it out!
• Super simple way to work with Twitter API (PHP + CSS)
  Another fab post from Antonio, this is a super tutorial on how to work with the Twitter API to create your own little app, with some PHP and CSS magic.
