Weekly Web Roundup: The Browser Edition #6

Weekly Web Roundup

One of the most followed events this week has been the Let’s Fix Outlook movement by the Email Standards Project. It was setup because Microsoft has confirmed they plan on using the Word rendering engine to display HTML emails in Outlook 2010. This means for the next 5 years your email designs will need tables for layout, have no support for CSS like float and position, no background images and lots more. Not cool.

I also discovered a very funny site called Twit Ha – a comic style daily blog related to the fun (and craziness) of social media. My favourite so far being the Pac Man twitter account.

Along with the big news there were plenty of other great articles and resources being published over the last week, my favourite of which are summarised below.

  • What is a Browser?
A surprising (and hilarious) video from Ji Lee, Creative Director at Google’s Creative Lab. Be warned most people assume Google is a browser!
  • 45 Beautifully Designed Book Covers
A list of 45 beautifully designed book covers that are unique and inspiring. A definite bookmark worthy post with a wealth of inspiration.
  • Found Type
A collection of beautiful and interesting typography found on signs and letters by Graham Hicks. A very unique approach to typography.
  • Living the freelance life while keeping your sanity
Sage advice from designer Tim Van Damme (who was recently on the Dock Series). I would agree wholeheartedly, especially having personal projects.
  • 7 Rich & Creative User Interfaces and How to Create Your Own
There are tons of great, creative user interface options featured here, from modal windows to live search to hover effects.
  • Sweatpants forever?
Excellent article from Eric Karajaluoto on why companies don’t put any value on the stories behind their brand, preferring to instead concentrate on price.
  • 35 CSS-Lifesavers For Efficient Web Design
Another week, another brilliant Smashing Mag post. This is an essential bookmark for every designer, with everything from advanced css selectors to browser extensions.
  • 22 Professional Photoshop Image Enhancing Tutorials
As a newbie in the world of DSLR’s, i loved this post from Six Revisions. It features a great roundup of tuts with my favourite being HDR effect..
  • 50 Inspiring Examples of Minimalism in Web Design
The key to a beautiful minimalist site is a solid and structured layout, as well as focus on stylish and well designed typography. A beautiful and inspiring list.
  • Font Collections – DIN Next
A new FF Din…I can hardly contain myself! The new DIN Next collection was released recently and is now firmly at the top of my wish list.

That’s a wrap up of the sixth edition. Were there any links you thought deserved a mention? If so drop a link in the comments so we can check them out.
